Health Education South West Severn supervises all postgraduate medical specialist training in the region.
Information about the Specialty
This excellent programme consists of a 5 year ST3-ST7 training programme in neurology based around Bristol, Bath, Gloucester and Taunton. It is a great place to live, train and work.
It is expected that all trainees will spend at least 2 years based at the regional neurosciences centre in Southmead Hospital (part of North Bristol NHS Trust) and 2 years at other centres in the rotation (Gloucester, Taunton and Bath). Out of hours work is currently done at Southmead hospital, and as non-resident on-call.
The programme offers very good opportunities for training in neurology with supervised exposure to general outpatient, inpatient and liaison neurology, stroke medicine and emergency on-call neurology.
There are excellent opportunities for further sub-specialist training and research.

Regional Neurosciences Unit
The neurology department has an active research and academic unit. Within neurology there are specialist clinics with interests in:

- Epilepsy Surgery
- Huntington’s Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Motor Neurone Disease
- Movement Disorders
- Neuro-Inflammatory Disease
- Neuro-Ophthalmology
- Surgical Treatment of Movement Disorders
These areas of expertise offer further opportunity for training and research at Southmead Hospital. The regional neurosciences centre has a Directorate of Neuroscience and a Neuroscience Institute.
